Description: Once a small fishing village, Puerto del Carmen has grown into a bustling cosmopolitan resort which is the largest and liveliest on the island, but still retains a certain traditional charm, particularly in and around the old town. The locals boast that their beach is the best on Lanzarote and many would agree. Add to this a huge choice of activities for all ages, a bewildering array of shops, bars and places to eat and a non-stop nightlife and it's easy to see why so many holidaymakers return here year after year. Distance from airport approximately six kilometres.

The Island
As its sun-drenched climate suggests, Lanzarote is just seventy miles off the coast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. Its volcanic origins are evident not only in the dark sands which fringe many of its beaches, but also in its dramatic, almost lunar, landscape. Most of the island's best resorts are along the east coast; some cosmopolitan towns with bustling shops and a lively nightlife and some fishing villages with little more than a couple of bars and restaurants, but all with gloriously soft, sandy beaches.

The Beaches
The sands of the Sahara Desert are shifting about sixty miles away, giving Lanzarote the warm breezes and dry climate that's perfect for days at the beach. But Lanzarote isn't just a beach holiday hot spot it's also a unique island where you can see Mother Nature at her most exciting.

Things to do
Journey to the Fire Mountains where you can witness volcanic action first hand amongst the lava fields and craters. Visit the Timanfaya National Park. Jeep Safari Discover the whole island in one day by open-top jeep. Visit the National Park at the south of the island and then travel into the north. Dive 30 metres below the Atlantic Ocean and get a glimpse of Atlantic sea life. Admire César Manrique's architecture in Teguise and Yaiza and then visit his famous Jardin de Cactus in the north of the island, at Guatiza
