The Maio Doze is situated on the edge of Almançil, five kilometres from the deluxe resorts of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. There are dozens of local restaurants to choose from, including Portuguese, South American, Thai and Italian, plus various superb seafood eateries and some funky beachside venues. Championship golf courses, top tennis clubs, great watersports and a wonderful ribbon of ocean-kissed beach are all within six kilometres.

Set back seventy metres from the road, the gated grounds of the Maio Doze offer a pleasing degree of privacy, with the palm-fringed swimming pool enclosed by two metre-high hedges. The bright and airy living room has rustic whitewashed walls, making for a cheerful, summery atmosphere. Sharing a shower room on the ground floor are two twin bedrooms, one of which is best suited to two children as it has a divan bed and a pull-out bed. Upstairs, both the double bedrooms have en suite bathrooms and each opens onto a balcony overlooking an adjacent field of fig, olive and almond trees.
