Highlights of the Canary Islands Explore volcanic lunar-like landscapes, bathe on beautiful white and dark sandy beaches and revel in a fantastic year round climate. Situated just off the northwest coast of Africa, each of the Canaries offers something for the more adventurous, watersports enthusiasts and those in search of relaxation. Blessed by cloudless skies, Lanzarote is an island of colour and contrasts, whilst in Fuerteventura sun soaked beaches, fantastic windsurfing and laid back nightlife make it a popular choice. Pluto wrote of a rich and happy land in the Atlantic, which was virtually destroyed by earthquakes and tidal waves almost 12,000 years ago. This was the lost continent of Atlantis and locals are convined that the Canary Islands are what remains of this submerged paradise. At Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote volcanic craters and lava fields resemble the surface of the moon, and the white sand dunes and temperant breezez of Fuerteventura are a windsurfers paradise.
Lanzarote
As its sun-drenched climate suggests, Lanzarote is just seventy miles off the coast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands, Its volcanic origins are evident not only in the dark sands which fringe many of its beaches, but also in its dramatic, alomst lunar, landscape. One of the most spectacular features on the island are the lava fields and sinister craters of the awesome Mountañas del Fuego - Fire Mountains.
Fuerteventura
The second largest of the Canary islands, Fuerteventura lies less than 95kms off the African Coast and is the least populated. The island has spectacular desert-like scenery, lofty volcanoes and desolate lava fields, plus mile upon mile of sandy beaches.
